Inclusion
of the disabled
Caring for the
fringe people concerns all of us.
An estimated ten
percent of the population is disabled. The physically and mentally
disabled and their families are subjected to miseries, which are
aggravated by the insensitiveness of the society.
Habitat technology
group has been active in making the lives of the disabled, less
painful through its creative interventions as a professional body
in the habitat sector as well as a group of concerned citizens.
Design and
construction of buildings is a major factor deciding the inclusion
and by that the quality of the lives of the disabled.
Habitat has been
pioneering efforts to design barrier free buildings
accessible to the disabled.
As an advocacy
group Habitat has been campaigning to bring about an awareness in
society on the need for barrier free buildings.
Another area in
which Habitat has been working focussedly is in constructing
buildings that would facilitate access to different groups of
disabled.
Habitat has been
working closely with the parent’s association of mentally
disabled children, and various NGOs and groups working for the
betterment of the disabled.
This has given us
the opportunity to evolve innovative ideas that will bring cheer
to the lives of mentally and physically disabled.
Habitat has taken
an active role in creating an awareness on the problems of
handicapped vis a vis barrier free construction.
